Scientific Background | SHLP4 is a 26-residue small humanin-like peptide encoded in the mitochondrial 16S rRNA region. In the original SHLP functional study, SHLP4 displayed a distinct cellular phenotype from several other family members and promoted proliferation in NIT-1 pancreatic beta-cell-derived cells under the reported experimental conditions. This sequence therefore provides a useful reagent for comparing mitochondrial-derived peptide signaling and sequence-dependent SHLP activity. |
Research Applications | - SHLP family structure-function studies
- mitochondrial-derived peptide research
- cell-proliferation assays
- mitochondrial signaling studies
|
Experimental Notes | The reported proliferative effect was observed in specific experimental cell systems. SHLP4 activity should be established independently in other cell types or assay formats. |
Selected References | - Naturally occurring mitochondrial-derived peptides are age-dependent regulators of apoptosis, insulin sensitivity, and inflammatory markers
