Scientific Background

SHLP4 is a 26-residue small humanin-like peptide encoded in the mitochondrial 16S rRNA region. In the original SHLP functional study, SHLP4 displayed a distinct cellular phenotype from several other family members and promoted proliferation in NIT-1 pancreatic beta-cell-derived cells under the reported experimental conditions. This sequence therefore provides a useful reagent for comparing mitochondrial-derived peptide signaling and sequence-dependent SHLP activity.

Research Applications
  • SHLP family structure-function studies
  • mitochondrial-derived peptide research
  • cell-proliferation assays
  • mitochondrial signaling studies
Experimental Notes

The reported proliferative effect was observed in specific experimental cell systems. SHLP4 activity should be established independently in other cell types or assay formats.

Selected References
  1. Naturally occurring mitochondrial-derived peptides are age-dependent regulators of apoptosis, insulin sensitivity, and inflammatory markers
