Scientific Background | SHLP6 is a 20-residue small humanin-like peptide encoded within the mitochondrial 16S rRNA region. The original functional characterization of the SHLP family reported that SHLP6 increased apoptosis in NIT-1 and 22Rv1 cells under the tested conditions, in contrast to the protective effects observed for some other SHLP family members. This functional divergence makes SHLP6 a useful comparator for studies of mitochondrial-derived peptide sequence and cell-response relationships. |
Research Applications | - SHLP family comparison studies
- mitochondrial-derived peptide research
- apoptosis-related cell assays
- mitochondrial signaling research
|
Experimental Notes | The pro-apoptotic observations were cell- and condition-specific. SHLP6 should not be described as a general apoptosis inducer without direct evidence in the intended experimental system. |
Selected References | - Naturally occurring mitochondrial-derived peptides are age-dependent regulators of apoptosis, insulin sensitivity, and inflammatory markers
