Scientific Background

SHLP1 is a 24-residue small humanin-like peptide encoded within a short open reading frame of the mitochondrial 16S rRNA region. SHLP1 was identified together with the SHLP family in studies showing that mitochondrial DNA can encode short bioactive peptides in addition to the canonical mitochondrial proteins. The SHLP peptides display distinct, sequence-dependent effects on cellular viability, mitochondrial biology and metabolic signaling, making SHLP1 useful as a defined reagent for comparative mitochondrial-derived peptide research.

Research Applications
  • small humanin-like peptide research
  • mitochondrial-derived peptide comparisons
  • cell-viability studies
  • mitochondrial signaling research
Experimental Notes

The SHLP family is functionally heterogeneous. Biological effects reported for SHLP2, SHLP3, SHLP4 or SHLP6 should not automatically be assigned to SHLP1 without direct experimental evidence.

Selected References
  1. Naturally occurring mitochondrial-derived peptides are age-dependent regulators of apoptosis, insulin sensitivity, and inflammatory markers
