Scientific Background

Bac2A is a linear cationic derivative of bovine bactenecin in which the two cysteines of the native cyclic peptide are replaced by alanines. This substitution removes the intramolecular disulfide and produces a short linear antimicrobial peptide that has been widely used for sequence-optimization and structure-activity studies. Published optimization work with Bac2A derivatives helped define the contribution of charge, hydrophobicity and residue position to antibacterial activity.

Research Applications
  • antimicrobial peptide structure-activity studies
  • bactenecin analog research
  • bacterial growth-inhibition assays
  • cationic peptide optimization
Experimental Notes

Bac2A is linear and should not be treated as structurally equivalent to disulfide-cyclized native bactenecin. Antimicrobial activity depends strongly on assay medium and ionic conditions.
