Scientific Background

MBP (1 - 17) is a synthetic research peptide in the myelin basic protein (MBP)-derived peptide family. Myelin basic protein contains several well-characterized T-cell epitopes used in experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis and human autoreactive T-cell studies. In susceptible mouse strains, the acetylated MBP(1-11) region is a dominant encephalitogenic determinant, while human MBP(87-99) has been extensively studied as an immunodominant autoreactive T-cell epitope in multiple-sclerosis-related research. Sequence substitutions, phosphorylation, biotinylation, and fluorescent labels are useful for probing TCR/MHC recognition, kinase activity, and assay format effects.

Research Applications
  • EAE and autoreactive T-cell studies
  • MHC class II peptide-binding assays
  • MBP-specific T-cell activation experiments
  • phosphorylation/kinase substrate studies
  • labeled peptide detection and binding assays
Experimental Notes

For antigenic peptides, MHC/HLA restriction, species, viral strain or tumor-antigen isoform, residue numbering, sequence substitutions, and chemical modifications can materially affect peptide binding and cellular recognition. The exact construct should therefore be matched to the intended assay and the reference sequence used in the experimental system.
