Scientific Background

Brevinin–1 is a synthetic research peptide in the brevinin amphibian antimicrobial peptide family. Brevinins are cationic host-defense peptides found in frog skin secretions. Members of the brevinin-1 family vary substantially in sequence, hydrophobicity, antimicrobial spectrum, and cytotoxicity. Synthetic brevinins are useful for examining how peptide composition and the characteristic C-terminal region influence membrane activity.

Research Applications
  • antimicrobial activity assays
  • membrane interaction studies
  • hemolysis/cytotoxicity comparisons
  • frog peptide structure-activity research
Experimental Notes

The exact sequence, isoform, residue substitutions, amidation, stereochemistry, labels, and other chemical modifications can change activity substantially. For receptor-activating peptides and membrane-active peptides, concentration and assay format are especially important and should be matched to the intended experimental system.
