β-actin is a member of highly conserved actins that are
involved in cell motility, structure, and integrity. β-actin exists
in two forms in cytoplasm: globular actin monomer (G-actin)
with molecular weight approximately 42 kDa and fibrous
polymer (F-actin). Due to its ubiquitous expression in
eukaryotic cells, β-actin is widely used as a loading control
for western blotting, markers for the integrity of cells. Defects
in β-actin are a cause of dystonia juvenile-onset (DYTJ),
often leading to abnormal postures, dopa-unresponsive
dystonia, developmental malformations, and hearing loss.
Research studies have also demonstrated that actin is associated
with malignancies such as breast cancer and lymphoma. |
